The story of a financially struggling teacher diagnosed with cancer may not seem like a promising premise for a TV show, but the fact that it has become one of the most highly acclaimed shows of all time is quite remarkable, especially considering its relatively recent debut. It usually takes years for a show to achieve cult status on such a large scale. Breaking bad is a phrase from the Southern US that means to behave rebelliously or engage in wild behavior. When the schoolteacher Walt and his former student Jesse start manufacturing crystal meth in a dilapidated mobile home, the title of the show seems rather understated, if anything!
When it comes to developing a video slot game based on such a massive TV franchise, the task naturally fell to IGT, renowned for their work in this field. Their portfolio already includes successful TV-inspired slots like ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’, as well as movie tie-ins such as the Ghostbusters slot and Jurassic Park. The burning question among Breaking Bad fans is – did they pull it off?
Theme & Features
IGT clearly rose to the challenge of the expansive theme, as evidenced by the imposing design of this slot! Featuring a large HD display above the main screen to showcase cut scenes from the show, integrated lighting, and ample-sized speakers for audio output. The casing itself is adorned with nearly life-sized images of Walt and Jesse in their iconic yellow hazmat suits. While the absence of voiceovers from the original actors is a bit disappointing, all the key elements from the TV show are faithfully incorporated.
I appreciate innovative design, and any game that eschews traditional playing card symbols in favor of theme-appropriate icons already earns points in my book. Here, IGT achieves just that by incorporating symbols of chemical elements from the periodic table, complete with intriguing trivia sound effects for each symbol. Although these symbols may have lower value compared to human character icons, they serve as wilds, substituting for all symbols except the bonus trigger whenever the designated chemical icon appears on screen.
The random wild feature proves highly beneficial during the chemical reaction free spins bonus, activated by the bonus trigger appearing on reels 1, 3, and 5, awarding 5 free spins. Interestingly, the second bonus round also revolves around free spins, presented in a much more visually appealing manner on the main HD display. The ‘Heisenberg’ spins are triggered by collecting 5 golden moth symbols, initiating 3 reels on the overhead screen. Further moth collection on the first ‘Mr. White’ reel unlocks the ‘Chemist Pays’ reel, followed by the most lucrative ‘Heisenberg Pays’ reels; all wins across the three reels are tallied at the end.
Summary
Personally, I found more success in the base game with the chemical reactions spins rather than in the more heavily promoted bonus round, but that could simply be my individual experience. Overall, the game is solid, but it falls slightly short of achieving the epic TV slot title it aimed for. Nonetheless, fans of the show won’t be disappointed by this homage to the cult classic Breaking Bad.
